Nigeria: Synthesis Report Study on the potential for Hydrogen in Nigeria

H2-diplo analysis " Synthesis Report on the potential for Hydrogen in Nigeria " is now available!

The global energy transition is considered the backbone of increased climate protection in line with the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. Consequently, governments, companies and international organizations are making commitments to scale up their ambitions towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing the share of climate-neutral energy sources as well as considering hydrogen production for decarbonization as well as diversification.

Nigeria has good prerequisites for the low-cost production of “green” hydrogen as most of the country has good potentials for renewable energy. In order to enable large-scale “green” hydrogen/PtX production in Nigeria, a favorable environment must be created. This includes for example investment in security, a clear and solid legal framework, and sufficient transport infrastructure.

To determine the conditions for such a favorable environment in detail, the H2-diplo office in Abuja has cooperated with consultants from GOPA and conducted a study assessing the current situation with regards to hydrogen use, and a basic overview of the relevant parts of the current energy sector. The study took place in 2023 and investigated renewable energy resources, specifically solar and wind resources (using GIS mapping) in terms of potential production and economic costs (or LCoE) across Nigeria, while also assessing the potential demand for or use of hydrogen within the different economic sectors utilising three different demand scenarios to 2060.

In the course of preparing the study, the H2-diplo team and the consultants engaged in extensive consultations through workshops, involving both private and public sector participants from the Nigerian energy sector.
