Datum: 07.August 2025

The report “African Green Hydrogen Report – Potential to Power: Advancing Green Hydrogen Across Africa”, co-published by H2-diplo, was officially launched at the Africa Green Hydrogen Summit 2025 in Cape Town.

On June 12, 2025, the African Green Hydrogen Report was launched during the Africa Green Hydrogen Summit in Cape Town, South Africa. In his respective remarks, South Africa’s Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa emphasized the pivotal role of green hydrogen for the continent’s industrial future: “[The report’s] message is unequivocal: Africa is not short of knowledge. Africa is ready to move from pilot to pipeline, from strategy to scale.” The high-level endorsement of the report was further underlined by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who mentioned it in his official opening speech of the Summit as “the most comprehensive insight to date into the continent’s green hydrogen potential”.

The summit brought together high-level government representatives, industry leaders, and development partners from across the continent and beyond. Discussions focused on building Africa’s green hydrogen economy, unlocking investment, and ensuring a just and inclusive energy transition. The recognition of the African Green Hydrogen Report at this occasion highlights its contribution to advancing the shared goal of a climate-resilient, sovereign, and opportunity-rich future for African countries.

The report is a joint effort by the GIZ projects H2-diplo – Decarbonization Diplomacy, International Power-to-X Hub, and H2.SA, in close collaboration with the Africa Green Hydrogen Alliance (AGHA) and the Government of South Africa. It provides a unique overview of the current state of green hydrogen development across the continent and highlights its transformative potential for sustainable industrialization. The report goes beyond technical analysis to offer a pan-African perspective on emerging hydrogen ecosystems, showcasing country case studies and outlining practical recommendations for policymakers, project developers and investors.
