Kenya’s Green Energy Ambitions Shine at the Global African Hydrogen Summit 2024

Kenya’s participation at the 2024 Global African Hydrogen Summit in Namibia highlights its commitment to advancing green hydrogen initiatives. The event showcased Kenya’s strategic energy plans and opportunities for regional collaboration to drive sustainable growth.
From September 3rd to 5th 2024, Kenya took center stage at the Global African Hydrogen Summit held in Windhoek, Namibia, which gathered over 1,000 energy leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders under the theme “From Ambition to Action: Fuelling Africa’s Green Industrial Revolution”. The Kenya Hydrogen Diplomacy Office (H2-diplo ) played an important role in facilitating Kenya’s participation, ensuring the representation of high-level government stakeholders from the Kenyan Green Hydrogen Project Coordination Committee and Secretariat. Kenya’s delegation included high-ranking representatives from the Ministry of Energy & Petroleum, the Energy & Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen), the Kenya Green Hydrogen Association (KGHA), and GIZ Kenya. Moreover, H2-diplo supported the organisation of a Women in Green Hydrogen breakfast event, an important initiative for amplifying women’s voices in the emerging green hydrogen sector.

Kenya’s participation in the conference was marked by several engagements and outcomes. During the summit, Kenya’s delegation participated in a dedicated Country Spotlight Session, highlighting the country’s green hydrogen strategy, with a focus on hydrogen policy development, industrial decarbonization and green fertilizer projects, leveraging the Port of Mombasa to position Kenya as a hydrogen export hub for Africa and beyond, as well as tapping into Kenya’s abundant geothermal resources to produce clean hydrogen. Kenya also deepened its involvement with the African Green Hydrogen Alliance, an initiative that promotes collaboration between African countries to accelerate green hydrogen development across the continent. Another highlight of the summit was the delegation’s visit to the Duares Green Hydrogen Village, Africa’s first green hydrogen village pilot project. The 12 million Euro project, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, features clean hydrogen-based fertilizer production, demonstrating hydrogen’s potential to support sustainable farming and food security across Africa.

Kenya’s participation in the summit opened doors for strategic partnerships and advancements in the green hydrogen sector. Next steps for the country include forming partnerships, accelerating the implementation of Kenya’s green hydrogen strategy and expanding cooperation with neighbouring African partners.
