Launch of Colombia’s Hydrogen Platform

On 29 August 2025, we proudly presented the platform that centralises information on the hydrogen value chain in Colombia, Ecosistema H2 Colombia, a joint effort between the Ministry of Mines and Energy and the H2-diplo Decarbonisation Diplomacy programme.

Colombia’s Hydrogen Platform serves as a means of facilitating access to knowledge and coordination between key  stakeholders. The launch event began with opening remarks by Leonard Maue, Climate Action Advisor at the German Embassy in Colombia, highlighting the collaboration between the two countries before an audience of more than 300 people. ‘We are proud to share our experiences and contribute to capacity building in Colombia, creating an enabling environment for green hydrogen.’ He highlighted the EcoH2Co platform as a milestone in consolidating efforts and fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors, academia, and financial institutions.

Gina Elisa Lagunes, head of implementation at the H2-diplo office Colombia, highlighted the progress made in implementing the Hydrogen Roadmap through technical assistance provided by the various GIZ programmes. She also highlighted the progress made in political dialogue, coordination, studies, and capacity building.

Juan Camilo Zapata, hydrogen leader at the Ministry of Mines and Energy, highlighted the Ministry’s efforts to position Colombia as an international hydrogen player, creating policies and instruments that help developers move through the project phases and reach a final investment decision.

Also lessons and perspectives from other regions were invited in: Quentin Dominique Blommaert, director of the H2-diplo office in Saudi Arabia, shared his thoughts on the challenges and opportunities of decarbonising 3 million tonnes of fossil hydrogen, highlighting the potential of renewable energies and green hydrogen for economic diversification.

José David Ortiz, member of the Hydrogen Working Group of the Electrical Energy Directorate of the Ministry of Mines and Energy, closed the meeting by presenting the H2 Colombia Ecosystem, which centralises information on hydrogen, including studies, regulations, policies, investment opportunities, and project records, to facilitate collaboration in the sector.

H2-diplo looks forward to seeing this new knowledge sharing platform come to full fruition and support Colombia’s and Latin America’s position in the global developing hydrogen economy.
