Successful 1st study trip with H2-diplo Kazakhstan

The H2-diplo office in Astana has organized a first study trip for a Kazakh delegation that aimed to enhance the knowledge and collaboration between Kazakhstan and Germany in the field of green hydrogen technologies and policies.

The study tour, taking place from 16th to 20th of October, provided a unique opportunity for representatives from various sectors in Kazakhstan, including ministries, universities, industry associations, and the energy sector, to gain valuable insights from Germany’s experience in developing and implementing hydrogen-related strategies. The diverse delegation fostered productive discussions both within the group and with European counterparts, significantly contributing to the global green hydrogen agenda.

Notably, the delegation included high-level officials: the Chairman of the Committee on Ecology and Natural Resources, a member of the Mazhilis of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and the Vice Minister of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Their participation underscored the importance of this initiative in shaping Kazakhstan’s energy future.

Key activities during the study tour included:

  • Meetings with the German Federal Foreign Office to discuss the geopolitics of green hydrogen, followed by discussions with the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) and the German Energy Agency (dena) on Germany’s updated Hydrogen Strategy.
  • A visit to the Northern German Living Lab (NRL), where participants gained practical insights into hydrogen production and Germany’s ongoing Energy Transition.
  • The delegation traveled to Brussels for discussions with the European Commission’s DG ENER (Energy) and DG INTPA (International Partnerships).
  • A visit to Hydrogen Europe, the largest European association dedicated to green hydrogen.
  • A visit to the Port of Duisburg to learn about its modernization project aimed at facilitating hydrogen transportation.
  • An outing to the Energy Lab 2.0 at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), where participants explored various Power-to-X processes, guided by experts from the Institute for Micro Process Engineering (IMVT).

The study tour successfully facilitated knowledge exchange, strengthened partnerships, and promoted collaboration on green hydrogen initiatives between Kazakhstan and Germany. The insights gained during this tour are expected to play a crucial role in advancing Kazakhstan’s hydrogen strategy and its commitment to a sustainable energy future.
