In June 2023, the Angolan government announced a proposal to develop a National Hydrogen Strategy, with a roadmap to gradually move away from oil dependence towards sustainable energy utilisation and decarbonisation. The proposed strategy aligns with the global movement towards sustainable energy and is expected to deliver a range of benefits to the Angolan people. The government’s commitment to this initiative demonstrates its dedication to advancing sustainable development while reducing its carbon footprint.
Within the context of the relationship between Angola and Germany, a proposal for a national hydrogen strategy was presented and considered on February 15, 2023. Although there are numerous varieties of hydrogen, Angola will place a significant emphasis on green hydrogen because of the country’s substantial capability for the development of renewable energy and its dedication to sustainability.
The Southern African – Green European Hydrogen Forum acted as a mediator between the distinguished Angola government stockholder visitors and the German experts. This was done to ensure that any concepts, concerns, or questions raised between the parties were clarified. The objective of this plan went much further than being a guide; instead, it was a demonstration that Angola is capable of becoming a hub for the production of hydrogen, which can be utilised for a variety of reasons, including energy, transportation, aviation, agriculture, refining, and other applications.
Through the fruitful collaboration between Sonangol and the German consortium Gauff Engineering / Conjuncta, Angola has already taken the initial steps with green hydrogen. This partnership is an agreement and testament to the shared vision and commitment towards a sustainable future. The aim is to develop the first green hydrogen plant in Angola, a significant milestone of the Southern African – Green European Hydrogen Forum. Alongside these efforts, the German-Angolan Hydrogen Office – H2-diplo has been actively engaging in dialogues, such as the first German-Angolan symposium on green hydrogen, educational technical webinars, and a working group with shareholders from the energy, oil, and gas business, further solidifying our commitment to this cause.
