On February 21st, 2025, Nigeria took a significant step toward advancing its clean energy transition with the launch of its National Hydrogen Policy development. The inception meeting, held in Abuja, was co-chaired by Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, Minister of State for Petroleum (Gas), and His Excellency Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning. Key government representatives from various ministries, including Environment, Science, Innovation and Technology, Water Resources, and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), participated in the event.
The initiative aims to create a robust and sustainable hydrogen policy aligned with Nigeria’s national development goals. Stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to fostering economic growth through hydrogen energy, which is expected to play a pivotal role in Nigeria’s energy transition.
Following the inception meeting, representatives from nine federal agencies convened in Lagos for a Hydrogen Policy Review. A draft of the national hydrogen policy will be presented to a wider stakeholder group in Abuja in April, followed by public hearings to incorporate feedback from the private sector, scientific community, and civil society. The H2-diplo-Office Abuja, represented by Joshua Garba, reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s hydrogen policy development. The office, implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Foreign Office, is actively contributing to the initiative as part of the International Climate Initiative. This milestone marks a crucial step toward integrating hydrogen into Nigeria’s energy mix, with further consultations and policy refinements expected in the coming months.
