H2-diplo hosts side-event at German-Ukrainian Energy Day on hydrogen potential

The 3rd German-Ukrainian Energy day took place in Berlin on 25th and 26th October under the motto “Powering Ukraine’s Future: Strengthening Energy Cooperation for Sustainable Recovery”.  In this context, H2-diplo hosted a roundtable together with the Energy Partnership to explore the potential for green hydrogen in Ukraine.

The German-Ukrainian Energy Partnership has been instrumental in providing emergency relief and supporting Ukraine during the ongoing war. Its actions focus on addressing energy challenges and contributing to post-war recovery. The annual German-Ukrainian Energy Day strengthens the partnership between Germany and Ukraine, facilitating strategic engagement, knowledge exchange, and business opportunities.

The joint side-event with H2-diplo took place at the GIZ Representation on the 26th October 2023 in Berlin and focused on discussing the perspectives and necessary frameworks for the green hydrogen market in Ukraine as part of a sustainable and green recovery process. Valuable inputs where given from the Federal Foreign Office, the Ukrainian Energy Ministry, dena and Berlin Economics who presented their latest study on behalf H2-diplo.

The study and also the following discussion showed that Ukraine does have a lot of potential to produce hydrogen, both for export, but also for domestic decarbonisation. However, there are many challenges and obstacles – besides the ongoing war – to realise this potential, e.g., the regulatory framework that still needs to be build and the financing of projects under the unclear demand from Germany and Europe.

The discussion also made clear that hydrogen will stay a vital point of collaboration within the German-Ukrainian Energy Partnership and the Hydrogen Diplomacy initiative.
