Strengthening Ties at the Energy Transition Dialogue Between Germany and the Gulf Cooperation Council

A panel discussion at the Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation focuses on climate neutrality and collaboration between Germany and the GCC.

On September 20th, 2023, the German Embassy in the United Arab Emirates, in collaboration with the Hydrogen Diplomacy Office Riyadh (H2-diplo), hosted a panel discussion addressing the path to climate neutrality in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. Titled “Energy in Transition – Powering Tomorrow,” the event took place at the Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation (DIDI) and was part of a Traveling Exhibition initiative by the German Foreign Office aimed at promoting global energy dialogue.

The panel centered on the GCC’s efforts to achieve the 1.5°C climate goal outlined in the Glasgow Agreement. In the opening remarks, a representative from the German Embassy emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to confront the climate challenges facing the region. Moreover, Ayesha Al Suwaidi from the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi presented on the UAE’s vulnerabilities to climate change, setting the stage for an in-depth discussion on three key areas: net-zero targets, decarbonizing energy systems and industries, and the implications for the labor market in a decarbonized economy.
The GCC countries have established ambitious goals, including significant reductions in carbon emissions, increased afforestation, and a boost in renewable energy usage. As highlighted by the Embassy representative, a multifaceted strategy is essential for accelerating the energy transition. “By coupling the relevant energy stakeholders’ existing knowledge, we can feasibly expedite the transition process,” Al Suwaidi stated. Furthermore, “More multilateral dialogue is essential to further enhance the sharing and exchange of knowledge and technologies.” To this end, the panel discussion provided a platform for collaboration and knowledge exchange between German and GCC representatives, united in their commitment to advancing the region’s climate neutrality goals. The event underscored the importance of international cooperation and the exchange of best practices in addressing the global climate crisis.
