Future Forum on Green Hydrogen Webinar: A Transformative Discussion for Fossil Fuel Exporters

Under the umbrella of the event series “Future Forum Green Hydrogen”, H2-diplo hosted a webinar titled on the role of hydrogen for the energy transformation of fossil fuel exporters.  It brought together experts and stakeholders to discuss the transformative potential of green hydrogen for countries that are currently economically dependent on exporting oil and gas.
The purpose of this event was the publication of a new study which H2-diplo carried out together with Fraunhofer ISI.  After the introduction by Marcus Hicken, Director for Energy Diplomacy, Climate and Security, German Federal Foreign Office, the webinar commenced with a presentation of the key findings of the study by Inga Boie from Fraunhofer ISI. The research explored the anticipated global demand for green hydrogen and its derivatives, with a special focus on how this demand could shape the economic transformation of fossil fuel-exporting countries, specifically based on the case studies Nigeria, Kazakhstan, and Saudi Arabia.

Following the presentation, a high-level panel discussion delved into the opportunities and challenges green hydrogen presents for these countries. The discussion was moderated by Hendrik Meller, Head of H2-diplo, who brought together Inga Boie with Elizabeth Press, Director Planning and Programme Support, IRENA and Husain Almakrami, Assistant Prof. Renewable Energy, Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu. The panelists shared diverse perspectives, highlighting the potential for green hydrogen to drive sustainable energy transitions and economic growth in regions traditionally reliant on fossil fuels.

Afterwards, the webinar concluded with an engaging Q&A session, allowing participants to interact directly with the panelists. This session fostered a deeper understanding of the topics discussed and provided a platform for attendees to share their thoughts and questions.

The event saw participation from delegates of foreign embassies in Berlin, German missions abroad, leading think tanks, international organizations, and relevant industries. Almost 80 participants attended, underlining the growing interest in green hydrogen’s role in global energy transformation.

The “Future Forum Green Hydrogen” series, part of the H2-diplo initiative of the Federal Foreign Office and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), continues to facilitate important conversations around green hydrogen. By incorporating foreign policy issues and geopolitical aspects, this series plays a crucial role in advancing the international dialogue on sustainable energy solutions.

We look forward to continuing this important discussion in future events!
